8月27日 SeagullWell after I posted my blog on friday and said I was bored, I had a little adventure. I decided to get out of the house and went to Wasaga Beach. As I was about to leave, I stopped into a parking lot to use my phone to make dinner plans. So here I am blab blab blabbing on my phone "yeah where ya wanna meet? Collingwood? Eastside Mario's? Badda boom badda bing? Ok... Ummmmm, wait. Oh crap, oh crap. Cancel those dinner plans because I need to do something now bye". While talking on the phone I caught sight of a seagull be-bopping around eating bugs and drinking from puddles, only problem was that his wing was broken and dragging on the ground. Luckily I had a cat carrier in the back and a towel. I chased buddy around the building (they can run fast!) and finally cornered him at a fence and threw the towel over him and popped him right in the carrier. This guy is just a baby, so I brought him home and proceeded to contact various wildlife rescue people. I guess everyone in the world was out and couldn't return phonecalls or emails. I did manage to get a hold of a lady that I know whom I consider quite the bird expert. "The Bird Whisperer" said that she could set the wing for me if I would look after him but when I told her the extent of the damage she was not comfortable with it. Note: Most vets and wildlife places will euthanize birds with broken wings simply because they don't have the time and space it takes for recovery. Depending on what the break or fracture is like, they might need to do it anyway.
So I was surfing the web trying to find a solution and give my new little friend a chance when I came across "The Oceanographic Environmental Research Society" and was quite impressed with them. I sent them an email, they got back to me fairly quickly. I spoke to the woman who is a vet. She said most people see these birds as a nuisance and don't want to deal with them, she said "we don't discriminate". These people are going to give this guy a chance and I am grateful for that, so he is with them now and I have her personal number to call anytime to check up on him. I'm gonna post their website in my links. Have a good sunday!
